Physician Staff

Dr. Samir AzerDr. Samir Azer completed his orthopaedic training in 1978. He received his orthopaedic training in Great Britain and in the United States. This was followed by six months of subspecialty training in hand surgery. Dr. Azer sat for the examination of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and successfully passed the examination at the first attempt. He then, and on a voluntary basis, sat for the recertification examination and passed that as well.

Dr. Azer practices general orthopaedics; however, he has a keen interest in total joint replacement. He has designed instrumentation that allows surgeons to perform knee replacement surgery through a minimally invasive approach using incisions that are 3-4 inches long instead of the traditional 10-12 inch incisions. He has contributed to the field of orthopaedics with publications and inventions. He has been invited to lecture on a variety of orthopaedic topics in physician seminars in the United States and abroad. He has also written chapters in reference orthopaedic textbooks. He has also been published in peer review literatures.

Dr. Shaun KhoslaDr. Shaun Khosla recently joined Suburban Orthopaedics in August, 2009, as a general orthopaedic surgeon. He was born and raised in the Northern Virginia area and began his medical training at the University of Virginia School of Medicine. Upon earning his medical degree, he then began his formal orthopaedic training at the University of Rochester. While at the University of Rochester he presented a number of orthopaedic trauma lectures as well as grand rounds and case presentations. He also published articles in peer reviewed orthopaedic journals and presented abstracts at national orthopaedic meetings. Dr. Khosla completed his training upon graduation in June, 2009, and subsequently joined our group. He practices as a general orthopaedic surgeon with a special interest in arthroscopic shoulder surgery, including rotator cuff and labral repairs.

 

Professional organizations

Our physicians are members of a multitude of professional organizations. Among them are:

  • American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Membership in the AAOS is granted through a selection process and only offered to orthopaedic surgeons who have successfully completed the examination of The American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and are in good standing among their piers and in the community.
  • American College of Surgeons (FACS) The College also offers fellowship to candidates who have fulfilled criteria similar to those met for membership in the AAOS.
  • International College of Surgeons (FICS)
  • Maryland Medical Society
  • Orthopaedic Trauma Association- Members are granted entry into this organization through nomination by two active candidates. Candidates had to have been published in the field of trauma for consideration.
  • American Association of Hand Surgery
  • DC Medical Society
  • Prince George’s Medical society
  • Southern Orthopaedic Association
  • National Medical Association
  • Virginia Medical Society

Hospital leadership

Dr. Ronald BransonDr. Azer is currently serving a two year term as President of the Medical Staff at Fort Washington Hospital Center and is also a member of the Board of Trustees of the hospital. He has also just completed a four year term as Chairman of the Department of Surgery. Over the years Dr. Azer was elected to hold numerous leadership positions in various hospitals. He was Chairman of Orthopaedics and President of the Medical Staff at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Northern Virginia. He also served as Chief of Orthopaedics at Greater Southeast Community Hospital for over 16 years.

During his tenure at Greater Southeast he also served as Coordinator of the Orthopaedic Residency Training Program and was charged with educating and training six orthopaedic residents each year, rotating from Howard University. Dr. Azer was also a member of the founding Board of Fort Washington Hospital.

Community

Our physicians have made themselves available for lectures on a variety of orthopaedic topics. We have and continue to lecture to various community organizations. Continuing Education, Lectures, and Publications

Our physicians subscribe to numerous orthopaedic publications and participate as lecturers and attendees in a multitude of orthopaedic seminars held in the United States and abroad. This assures our patients that they are receiving state of the art orthopaedics with cutting edge technology.

Our physicians have been invited on numerous occasions to lecture at orthopaedic seminars on a variety of topics. They have also been published in peer review journals. Dr. Azer has contributed two chapters in two reference orthopaedic textbooks that are published and distributed worldwide. One chapter is titled Complications of Treatment of Femoral Shaft Fractures and is published in the third edition of a two volume multi-authored textbook “Complications In Orthopaedic Surgery” published by Lippincott.

The second chapter: “The Self Guiding Nail” appeared in the second edition of “The Science and Practice of Intramedullary Nailing” published by Williams and Wilkins.

Research and Patents

Doctor sitting in front of a computerWe have also made numerous contributions to the advancement of the field of orthopaedics. Dr. Azer holds three patents in the field.

He designed a system for treating fractures of long bones. In addition he has recently completed the design of instrumentation for performing total knee replacement through a minimally invasive approach. The instrumentation is marketed by Omni Science, an orthopaedic company with distribution in the United States and worldwide.
